The Timeline of Lamps Part 1

All of our houses nowadays are lighted with Led Tubes and highly decorative celling lights. Have you ever wondered how we got here? Most of us familiar with Thomas Alva Edison who is known as the father of Electric lamps but there is a past and present for that. Let’s take a deeper look at The Timeline of Lamps.

Lamps were in use from early times (70,000 BCE) when man first invented fire. It is said to be invented by ancient Babylonian. These lamps were created by filling hollow rocks and shells with moss which is greased with animal fat and igniting it. These crude lights were known as “Animal Lamps”
After this “Oil Lamps” started to appear (4,500 BCE) which lasted (in Time) more than Animal Lamps not only that this led to creation of many festivals and rituals back in time

The major source of light changed from oil lamps by the invention of candles by Man around (3000 BCE). It is said to be invented and first used by Ancient Egyptians . rushlights, the first form of candles made by soaking the dried pith of the rush plant in melted animal fat or grease

The world was shown a new path of light by the Persians in (900 BCE) with the inventions of kerosene Lamp . As the word denotes worked on kerosene a derivative of Crude Oil. Kerosene lamps were widely used for lighting in rural areas of Africa and Asia It is used till now in many places as emergency light source when needed but most of them ended up in the museum

In 1807 AD By the invention of Electroluminescence, an optical and electrical phenomenon, in which a material emits light in response to the passage of an electric current or to a strong electric field. The door to the first Electrical Lamp was Unlocked but the scientific world needed to wait until 1879 for Thomas Alva Edison to open that door to the World with the invention of the carbon-thread Incandescent lamp.

Later the scientific world developed Many different Electric bulbs such as CFL, Sodium Vapor, Arc Lamp, LED Etc. (Part-2)
